This tiny bird looks like a miniature creature built for disappearing into Australia’s desert grasses. The Rufous-crowned Emu-wren is a small, elusive bird found in dry heathlands and scrubby habitats of southern Australia. Its delicate body, short rounded wings, and long, narrow tail help it weave effortlessly through dense vegetation, where it spends much of its time searching for insects and other tiny invertebrates. The warm rufous crown gives this otherwise subtle bird a beautiful flash of color—but spotting one is another story entirely.
