Currently, modern Supreme Court justices serve an average of 26 years—nearly double the historical average of 15 years.
This federal lifetime tenure stands out sharply against the states. In fact, 47 states already limit terms on their highest courts, where judges average just 13 years. Oklahoma is the only state where tenure exceeds 18 years. 📍
An 18-year limit, paired with mandatory retirement at age 75, would align the Supreme Court with standard state practices.
Crucially, it would guarantee every president two appointments per four-year term. This removes timing and chance from the process, successfully reducing the average Supreme Court tenure by about eight years. 🗳
