From a Cold Crate to Warm Arms: The Rescue of Seven Abandoned Puppies

The sun had barely risen over the small South Dakota trailer park when Jordan Fiegen noticed something strange sitting near her parents’ home — a blue crate half-hidden in the frost.

The morning air bit at her skin as she walked closer, curiosity quickly giving way to dread. Inside the soaked container were seven fragile puppies, shivering in silence.

A Chilling Discovery on a Winter Morning

The night before, a storm had rolled through, drenching everything in sight.

The crate had filled with dirty rainwater, leaving the puppies’ once-white fur coated in mud and grime. They were huddled together tightly, not crying, not barking — just breathing faintly as if clinging to the last bit of strength they had left.

Jordan later said she believed they’d gone quiet because they were close to giving up.

It was the kind of sight that made her heart break instantly. The puppies were far too young to survive such cold alone, and their tiny bodies were trembling uncontrollably.

For a moment, she just stood there, stunned by the cruelty of it — the way someone had left them in a box to face the night’s freezing rain.

A Race Against the Cold

Jordan soon found out that the mother dog belonged to someone in the trailer park, but the owner was nowhere to be found.

With the temperature dropping fast, there was no time to waste. She gathered all seven pups into her arms, wrapping them in whatever blankets she could find, and rushed them inside.

Her heart pounded as she set them down on the floor, their tiny paws slipping on the linoleum.

The first thing she did was draw a warm bath — not too hot, just enough to ease the chill without shocking their fragile bodies. One by one, she washed away the mud and rain, revealing soft white fur underneath.

Each puppy was different — one with a pink nose, another with a freckled face — but all of them had the same wide, innocent eyes that told a story of fear and exhaustion.

After their baths, the puppies finally began to relax. They curled up together on a soft towel, little bodies pressed close, their breathing deep and even.

For the first time since she found them, Jordan let herself cry. All the tension, fear, and heartbreak poured out as she looked at the small pile of sleeping lives she had just saved. “I just sobbed over them,” she said later. “They didn’t deserve what happened to them.”

Knowing she couldn’t do this alone, Jordan reached out to Almost Home Canine Rescue (AHCR), a local organization known for helping abandoned dogs.

The team responded immediately, offering to take over their care and find foster homes. Within hours, the puppies had warmth, food, and people determined to keep them alive.

From Hopeless to Hopeful

The following days brought a transformation that even Jordan couldn’t have imagined. Once the puppies were stable, they visited the vet for flea treatments and deworming.

They were given gentle food, clean beds, and names that matched their new beginnings — Bluey, Bingo, Bert, Ernie, Bear, Kona, and Nova.

Each one started to show a spark of personality. Bluey, the biggest, was the first to wag his tail. Nova loved cuddles, pressing her nose into the crook of every volunteer’s arm.

Even tiny Bert, the weakest of the litter, began to chase toys around his foster home.

Watching their recovery was like watching life bloom in real time — what once looked like seven lifeless pups became a group of joyful little explorers.

“They’re completely different dogs now,” Jordan said proudly. “When I first found them, they could barely move. Now they’re full of energy, bouncing around like they’ve always been safe.”

JORDAN FIEGEN

Almost Home Canine Rescue divided the group among three foster families who showered them with love and attention.

Photos soon began circulating online — seven snow-white puppies with bright eyes and tails wagging. The same dogs who had nearly frozen to death were now playful, curious, and ready to trust the world again.

Soon, each of them will be available for adoption, and Jordan has no doubt they’ll find families quickly. “They’re so beautiful and loving,” she said. “Anyone who meets them will fall in love right away.”

What began as a cold, heartbreaking morning ended as a story of hope — a reminder that even in the harshest conditions, kindness can rewrite fate.

Those seven puppies once faced the edge of despair, but thanks to one woman’s compassion, they’ll now grow up knowing warmth, comfort, and love.
