1968 Volvo Amazon 123 GT (Targa Rally Car)

Production of this high-performance two-door began for the 1967 model year as Volvo’s response to customer demand for a factory-backed sporting version of the Amazon.

The 123 GT borrowed the high‑compression B18B four‑cylinder from the P1800 sports car, fitted with twin SU carburetors and producing about 115 horsepower. This represented a notable increase over the standard Amazon’s roughly 85-100 horsepower output, depending on specification.

Distinctive factory 123 GT features included auxiliary fog and driving lamps, special trim, and fender‑mounted mirrors, although these items have been altered or deleted on this particular rally‑prepared example.

A four‑speed manual transmission was standard, paired with electric Laycock de Normanville overdrive. Front disc brakes and uprated suspension addressed the increased performance, while the 110 CI (1.8‑liter) engine allowed a top speed of approximately 105 to 110 mph.

Production figures remain debated, with no more than 2,000 units built, concentrated mainly in the 1967 and 1968 model years.

By this time, the Amazon’s rally pedigree was well established, with significant class wins and strong results in closed‑road tarmac Targa‑style rally events as well as traditional European stage rallies, contributing to the model’s enduring competition reputation.
