1963 Porsche 356 B Carrera 2 ‘Sunroof’ Coupe

The most powerful 356 variant emerged when Porsche combined its updated T-6 bodywork with racing-derived four-cam engine technology, and this particular example was bodied by Reutter, the firm responsible for most period 356 coupe coachwork.

Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1961, the revised design featured larger front and rear windows, a new engine cover with dual grilles, and a squarer front hood that increased luggage capacity.

An electrically operated sliding sunroof became available for the first time on a 356 coupe in this T-6 generation, making a Carrera 2 sunroof Reutter-bodied car especially rare.

Public sales commenced in 1962, marking another milestone as these became the first production Porsches equipped with disc brakes as standard equipment on all four wheels.

The air-cooled, horizontally opposed four-cylinder displaced just under 2.0 liters (about 120 cubic inches) and utilized four overhead camshafts, aluminum alloy cylinders with Ferral coating, and plain bearings for the forged crankshaft in the Type 587/1 Carrera 2 engine, with output reaching about 130 horsepower.

Auto Motor und Sport and other period-style figures place top speed around 120 mph with 0-60 mph times around 9 seconds.

Despite a substantial roughly $7,500 U.S.-market price tag, demand exceeded the planned 100-unit homologation run, with most references now citing about 278 Carrera 2s built in total between 1962 and 1964, only a small fraction of which were Reutter-built sunroof coupes like this car.
