1902 Oldsmobile Model R ‘Curved-Dash’ Runabout
America’s first mass-produced automobile emerged from Ransom Olds’ Detroit, Michigan factory in 1901, with the Model R achieving production of 425 units that first year and 2,500 in 1902 using early assembly line methods with interchangeable parts.
The $650 runabout took its name from the distinctive curved dashboard, a carriage feature that protected passengers from mud and manure thrown by horses’ hooves.
The simple black and maroon bodywork sat high off the ground on a 66-inch wheelbase, with full-length leaf springs supporting the lightweight 850-pound chassis. Steering came via a right-side tiller, familiar to those accustomed to carriages.
A horizontal single-cylinder engine of 95 cubic inches produced approximately 5 horsepower, driving the rear axle through a two-speed planetary transmission and chain drive. Neverout brass oil lamps provided lighting.
Over 19,000 Curved Dash Oldsmobiles were built through 1907, establishing Olds Motor Works as a pioneer in American automotive manufacturing.
