1970 Dodge Challenger R/T ‘V-Code’
Arriving fashionably late to the pony car wars as a 1970 model, this E-body coupe offered Chrysler’s most extensive engine lineup, spanning from economical slant-sixes to thundering big-blocks.
The hardtop body featured flowing lines with optional shaker hood scoops, vinyl roof treatments, and wide color selections including the vivid Hi-Impact hues.
The V-Code designation identified the 440 cubic inch RB-series engine fitted with three Holley two-barrel carburetors, marketed as the “Six-Pack” setup. This configuration was factory rated at 390 horsepower, slotting between the 375-horsepower single four-barrel 440 Magnum and the legendary 426 Hemi.
Manual transmissions were paired with Hurst pistol-grip shifters, while TorqueFlite automatics were also available.
Production records indicate approximately 1,600 to 1,650 Challenger R/T hardtops received the V-Code powerplant for 1970. The R/T package included heavy-duty suspension components, power front disc brakes, and Rallye instrumentation.
Many collectors favor the Six-Pack over the Hemi due to better street manners, similar real-world performance, lower acquisition and maintenance costs, and comparable rarity within the Challenger lineup.
