1948 Tucker 48
Tucker didn’t just build a car; he adapted a helicopter. The ’48 was powered by a rear-mounted, 335-cubic-inch flat-six engine originally designed for aircraft. This gave the car a massive 372 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to hit 60 mph in roughly 10 seconds—an incredible feat for a sedan that weighed over 4,000 pounds.
The Tucker Corporation collapsed under a controversial SEC investigation and alleged sabotage by established competitors. Today, 47 of the original 51 cars survive, serving as rolling monuments to a vision that was simply too far ahead of its time.
