When California passed its strict 1958 vehicle height laws, most builders lowered their cars and hoped for the best. But Ron Aguirre had a different idea — he decided to outsmart the system.

In 1959, Aguirre installed modified Pesco aircraft hydraulic pumps into his radical 1957 Corvette known as X-Sonic, creating an adjustable ride-height setup that allowed the car to lift for legal driving and drop for show. It wasn’t just clever — it was revolutionary.

Alongside innovators like Jim Logue and Bill Hines, Aguirre helped lay the foundation for what would become modern lowrider hydraulics. What started as a workaround became a movement, changing custom car culture forever.

Sometimes the best innovations aren’t about going faster — they’re about rising to the challenge.
