1930 Delage Series C Drophead Coupé
Racing success on European circuits translated directly into Louis Delage’s ultimate luxury statement for the road. The D8 (Delage 8-cylinder) carried forward engineering excellence that won Delage the 1927 World Championship for Manufacturers, when the marque triumphed over Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz, and Alfa Romeo on track.
Maurice Gaultier designed this sophisticated automobile around a 4,061cc (248 cubic inch) straight-eight engine producing about 105 horsepower. The overhead-valve powerplant with five main bearings delivered exceptional refinement and quiet running that rivaled Hispano-Suiza. A three-speed manual transmission and semi-elliptic leaf springs completed the mechanical specification.
Debuting at the October 1929 Paris Salon to enthusiastic reception, the D8 became the foundation for elaborate custom coachwork from Europe’s finest builders. This Series C example features a 130-inch wheelbase and distinctive grey-green bodywork with black fenders.
