This bird… smells like cow manure.
In the swampy forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Hoatzin moves slowly through riverside vegetation, feeding almost entirely on leaves. Inside its enlarged crop, those leaves ferment — much like a cow’s stomach — producing that unmistakable odor. What makes it extraordinary is its ancient, almost prehistoric lifestyle: chicks are born with clawed wings, allowing them to climb branches if they fall into the water. A relic of another time in tangled wetlands, yet a living glimpse into evolution’s past.
