Early one quiet morning in Little Rock, the newest employee at the Central Arkansas Rescue Effort for Animals (CARE) arrived to start her day.

The sun hadn’t yet climbed above the trees when she spotted a cardboard box sitting by the shelter’s door.

Scribbled on top were the words: “6 puppies … around 2 months.”

A Morning Surprise No One Expected

Her heart sank. She’d only just joined the rescue, eager to help animals in need, but she never imagined her first encounter would involve abandoned babies.

She called for help as her hands trembled. When CARE’s executive director, Alexandra Mounger, and the program coordinator arrived, they quickly brought the box inside.

The team opened the flaps, and six tiny faces blinked up at them — confused, hungry, and scared.

Inside, the puppies huddled together on a piece of worn cloth. They had clearly been left without food or water for hours.

Leia, Rey, and Kylo each had their own spark — curious, mischievous, and full of life once they realized they were safe.

Their days soon filled with gentle play, warm meals, and kind voices.

The staff often caught themselves smiling at the sound of tiny paws scampering on the floor — a sound that reminded them why their work mattered so deeply.

Lessons in Kindness and Responsibility

Within days, each puppy found a temporary home with a loving foster family. These families would care for them until they were ready for adoption.

For CARE, this was the best possible outcome. Fosters are the bridge between heartbreak and healing — the people who teach animals that the world can be kind again.

Mounger hopes stories like this one remind people that rescue work never stops. The demand for help has grown rapidly in recent years, and organizations like CARE are stretched thin.

Every volunteer, donation, and foster parent makes a difference, especially when large litters like this appear overnight.

“There are so many ways to help,” Mounger explained. “Even sharing our stories or helping your neighbor get their dog fixed can prevent suffering.”

Spaying and neutering, she says, remain the most powerful tools in reducing the number of unwanted animals.

Too often, well-meaning owners find themselves overwhelmed and choose abandonment instead of seeking help. Simple actions — scheduling vet appointments, learning about pet behavior, and reaching out to rescues — can stop these tragedies before they start.

As for Luke, Han, Finn, Kylo, Leia, and Rey, their future looks bright. Soon they’ll be ready to meet families who will love them unconditionally.

For now, they’re discovering what it feels like to be safe — to have full bellies, soft beds, and gentle hands guiding them toward a better life.
