One of the most innovative automotive designs of the 1950s featured a transparent Plexiglas section covering the front half of its roof. The 1954 Mercury Monterey Sun Valley Coupe represented a bold experiment in automotive styling, combining the practicality of a hardtop with the open-air appeal of a convertible.

This distinctive Mercury variant commanded a premium price of $2,562, making it more expensive than any other Mercury model except the convertible. Production remained limited, with fewer than 9,800 units manufactured during its single model year.

Under the hood, the Sun Valley carried a 256 cubic inch overhead valve V-8 engine producing 162 horsepower, paired with Mercury’s two-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. The chassis featured independent front suspension with coil springs, a live rear axle with leaf springs, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.
