This bird carries its chick on its back through the wetlands like a moving cradle.
In the wide marshes and open grasslands of North America, the Sandhill Crane is known not only for its graceful dances, but also for its deep devotion as a parent. When the chick becomes tired or danger approaches, the adult gently lets the young climb onto its back, carrying it safely through water and tall grass.
These towering birds feed on seeds, insects, roots, and small animals while carefully guiding their young across the landscape. Their strong family bonds often last long after the chicks have grown.
A giant of the wetlands with a surprisingly gentle heart, yet one of nature’s most devoted parents.
