This bird flashes an electric-blue rump that looks unbelievably bright against the dark rainforest floor. The Blue-rumped Pitta lives in Southeast Asian forests and spends most of its time hopping quietly through leaf litter searching for insects, snails, and tiny creatures. Even though its body is packed with vivid colors, it can disappear almost instantly into shadows when standing still. Birdwatchers often hear its loud whistle first long before they ever manage to actually spot one nearby.
