1965 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible
The 1965 model year brought major improvements to Oldsmobile’s 442, transforming it into one of the quickest and most refined muscle cars to come out of Detroit. The convertible version offered open-air excitement paired with serious performance capability, though only 3,468 of the 25,003 total 442s built that year were convertibles.
For 1965, Oldsmobile replaced the previous 330 cubic inch V8 with a new 400 cubic inch V8 producing 345 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. A Rochester 4-barrel carburetor fed the big-block engine, and buyers could choose between a 4-speed manual transmission or the optional Jetaway 3-speed automatic.
This engine upgrade redefined the 442 nomenclature from its original meaning (4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed manual, dual exhaust) to represent 400 cubic inches, 4-barrel carburetor, and dual exhaust.
Performance testing confirmed the car’s newfound muscle. Car and Driver recorded a 0-60 mph time of approximately 5.5 seconds, placing the 442 among the fastest American production cars of its era and establishing it as a formidable rival to Pontiac’s GTO.
