The Varied Bunting is a small songbird of Mexico and the southwestern United States, especially in dry scrublands and thorny habitats. During the breeding season, the male develops an extraordinary mix of purple, blue, red, and pink plumage, while the female remains much more subtly colored. It quietly searches the ground and low vegetation for seeds and insects, often staying hidden among dense shrubs.
