A scared German shepherd puppy arrived swollen, sick, and relinquished, but steady care and gentle love helped Chance become the sweet boy he was meant to be.
It was a typical September day last year when an urgent call reached The Animal Pad.
The dog rescue in San Diego, California, partners with an emergency veterinarian.

That vet had news about a German shepherd puppy who needed help right away.
He was only about seven months old.
Someone had brought him to the ER with a reported dog bite wound.
The people who saw him knew something else seemed to be happening.
On top of that wound, his face was completely swollen.
The swelling looked heavy and sore, as if pain had settled there and refused to leave.
Blood results made the news even harder.
He was battling chronic illnesses rarely found in a puppy his age.
His first year should have been full of play and soft beds.
Instead, he arrived scared, sick, and so alone.
Then his family made a choice that changed his path.
They relinquished him to the clinic.
Sadly, the life he knew ended in that bright, busy room.
That is when The Animal Pad learned about him.
Lauren, The Animal Pad’s director, saw the bloated pup and dropped everything to help him.
The Animal Pad took him in and began the hard work of stabilizing him.
Later, they named him Chance.
It was a small word with a big hope inside it.
They ran every test they could while they fought to steady his body.
Despite the pain and fear, Chance’s sweet personality shone through.
He was hurting, but he was not hard.
He was sick, but he was not mean.
You could tell a very special dog was waiting behind it all.
The Animal Pad said so on Facebook.
“You can tell he is a very special dog behind it all,” they wrote.
“His first year on the planet should not have been this, and now he’s fighting for his life.”
A puppy that young should have been chasing toys, not fighting for his life.
Still, Chance kept trying.
That trying mattered.
One blood transfusion and many tests later, the answer about his face grew clearer.
Chance was diagnosed with an abscess there.
It would need to be surgically drained.
It was a painstaking process, not a quick afternoon.

The veterinary team worked step by slow step.
The veterinary team ultimately drained the abscess.
Little by little, they restored his face to its typical size.
He immediately felt so much better.
“He looks like a brand-new dog,” The Animal Pad wrote on Facebook.
The team celebrated that change, but they stayed wary of his prognosis.
His bloodwork still showed signs of chronic illness.
He was also painfully skinny.
You could see too much of his frame.
You could see how hard his young life had already been.
A drained abscess was a mercy, but it was not the whole road.
So his caregivers did what loving people do when the news is mixed.
They stayed.
They showered him with love.
They continued a treatment plan to help him grow and thrive.
Love did not replace medicine.
Medicine did not replace love.
Chance needed both, and he got both.
Days began to stack into something kinder.
There were checks, medicines, and careful eyes on him.
There were soft voices and hands that did not rush him.
For a puppy left at an ER, steady care was a new language.
It said he could rest here.
It said the people around him were not leaving.
Chance answered in the way dogs often do.
He offered a softer body.
He offered a glance that lasted.
He offered a sweetness that refused to disappear.
The Animal Pad had seen that sweetness from the start.
Behind the swelling, a special soul had been waiting for room to breathe.
Healing was still rarely a straight line.
Some mornings hope felt bright.
Some mornings the bloodwork asked everyone to stay humble.
Chronic illness does not care that a puppy should be playing.
It asks for time, skill, and people who refuse to quit.
Chance had those people.
Lauren had dropped everything on the day he needed her.
The rescue had taken him in when his family let him go.
Caregivers kept pouring patience into the quieter days.
That is how a scared puppy starts to trust a gentle world.

Not all at once.
One calm hour at a time.
A few months have passed since his rescue.
The resilient boy is now stronger than ever.
He is no longer only the swollen puppy waiting in an emergency room.
He is a dog with a name, a team, and a foster home.
In that home, he has been enjoying play with other pups.
He has been cuddling with his humans.
He is learning the happy noise of paws nearby.
He is learning that another dog can mean fun, not fear.
He is finding laps, quiet corners, and the gift of being wanted.
For a dog who arrived so sick, those ordinary joys are extraordinary.
A game with other pups can feel brand new to a dog who has known so much pain.
A person who stays close can make a quiet room feel safe.
This is the life his first months should have held.
It is arriving late, but it is arriving.
Chance is still on a medical hold.
The veterinary team continues to treat his abscess and other ailments.
Healing is still a job, not a finished picture.
Anyone who has loved a sick dog knows that careful pause.
You cheer the good days.
You respect the slow days.
You do not rush a body that is still mending.
The Animal Pad understands that.
A medical hold means his body still comes first.
They are guarding his chance to get well.
Hope has a clearer shape now.
He will be available for adoption soon.
A forever home is no longer only a distant wish.
The staff cannot wait to see him off to that home.
Until then, they enjoy every update from his loving foster parents.
A happy update about play can brighten a whole day.
A note about a cuddle can do the same.
Each small sign says the skinny, swollen puppy is learning comfort.
The Animal Pad staff smile at those reminders of how far he has come.
They remember the bloated face and the thin frame.

They also see the dog gentle care has helped him become.
Erica Fiore, director of marketing for The Animal Pad, said it in the simplest way.
“Chance is the sweetest!” she told The Dodo.
Anyone who has followed his story can believe that.
Sweetness is easy to miss when a dog is swollen and scared.
It is easy to miss when test results look grim.
It is easy to miss when a family walks away.
Chance’s sweetness had been there anyway.
It showed under the pain in the ER.
It showed after the transfusion, when he was tired but still himself.
It showed when his face finally looked like his face.
It shows now in play and in quiet cuddles.
That is the part that stays with you.
A young dog kept offering trust to people who decided he was worth the work.
Chance did not choose the reported wound, the swelling, or the illness in his blood.
What he offered, in the only way a dog can, was gentleness.
He let people help him.
He let relief in when his face finally eased.
He let foster love hold him while treatment continued.
The Animal Pad knew he was special behind it all.
Now more people can see it too.
He is stronger than he was on that frightening September day.
He is healing, still, with careful eyes on him.
He is playing with other pups again.
He is cuddling with the humans who foster him.
Soon a forever family may get to learn his little ways.
Until that day, he is held by people who already love him.
His name fits.
Chance was the gift they offered when the future looked thin.
