Dog Sent Back to Shelter Only 30 Minutes After Adoption for Being “Too Big”

For a short, shining moment, S’mores thought his life had finally turned around.

The friendly, chocolate-and-white shelter dog had spent weeks in a San Francisco Bay Area kennel, waiting for the day someone would choose him.

When that day arrived, he left the shelter with a proud trot and a wagging tail, ready to start his new life.

Adopted at Last — But Only for 30 Minutes

But barely thirty minutes later, the front doors opened again — and there was S’mores, walking back inside. His adopter had returned him, saying he was “too big.”

The reason stunned everyone. In half an hour, S’mores hadn’t grown an inch, but his excitement had been replaced by confusion and sadness.

Word of the quick return spread quickly among local rescuers, who couldn’t believe that something so trivial had cost him his chance at happiness.

For a dog who had already been overlooked for far too long, it felt like yet another unfair twist in his story.

But this time, his luck was about to change — because the right people were listening.

A Rescue Team Rallies for S’mores

When Sarah Meiches, cofounder of Mutt Luv Rescue, heard what had happened, she was floored. The idea that S’mores had lost a home over his size alone seemed absurd.

She knew they couldn’t let him spend another night behind kennel bars.

Within hours, an experienced foster offered to take him in, and the rescue community sprang into action.

Mutt Luv Rescue partnered with Not Your Average Rescue to coordinate his release, arranging transportation so he could be in a home before the day ended.

The handoff happened smoothly — a volunteer picked him up, secured him in the car, and drove him to his foster’s front door.

For S’mores, it was the first step into a world where people worked together to help him instead of turning him away.

Sarah described the rescue effort as a perfect example of what happens when animal lovers unite for a common cause. “When we come together,” she said, “good things happen.”

Learning What a Home Feels Like

It didn’t take long for S’mores’ fosters to realize he had probably never lived inside a house before. Everyday sights and sounds seemed new to him — the hum of a refrigerator, the clink of dishes, the comfort of a soft dog bed.

But with gentle guidance, he began to understand what home life was all about. Within a few nights, he was sleeping soundly indoors, exploring his surroundings with curiosity, and learning basic commands.

His foster family quickly saw his intelligence shine. He loved training sessions, going on hikes, and discovering new smells on outdoor adventures.

Inside the house, S’mores proved to be a constant companion.

Whether his foster was cooking dinner, working at a desk, or relaxing on the couch, he was never far away.

Sometimes he’d sit quietly at their side; other times, he’d nuzzle in close, resting his head like a pillow on their lap. His personality blended playful goofiness with a deep desire to belong. He wanted to be part of every moment, big or small.

Though he could get a little overexcited at times, his eagerness to please made him a quick learner.

His fosters often found themselves wondering how anyone could have let him go. To them, S’mores wasn’t “too big” — he was the perfect size for love.

MUTT LUV RESCUE

What he needed now was a forever family who would see him for the wonderful, loyal dog he truly is.

S’mores is healthy, happy, and ready for adoption.

With the right people, he’ll be more than just a pet — he’ll be a constant friend, a hiking buddy, a kitchen helper, and a warm presence at the end of every day.

For now, he waits patiently, trusting that the next time he walks out of a shelter or foster home, it will be for good.
