Puppy Found Abandoned in North Carolina With Heartbreaking Note Beside Him

It’s heartbreaking how common it has become to see dogs left behind on the streets.

Shelters and animal control officers deal with these calls almost every day, and dog lovers everywhere know the sinking feeling of hearing another story of abandonment.

A Puppy Left Behind With Nothing But a Note

But one recent case in New Bern, North Carolina, stood out from the rest. This wasn’t just another puppy left alone to fend for himself.

Beside him sat a small piece of paper that carried both a plea and a confession.

It was only a few short lines, but it revealed the desperation of someone who couldn’t keep their puppy — and the careless way they chose to let him go.

The words on the note read: “Please take me. I’m a 12-week-old hound. I don’t bite. Take great care of him. He has food with him.”

Those sentences left even the most seasoned rescuers shaken.

The Discovery That Left Officers Speechless

On a hot summer day, a man walking near the Books-A-Million parking lot in New Bern noticed a cage sitting off to the side.

Inside was a small puppy, just three months old, panting in the heat. The man saw no water, no shelter from the sun, and only a small bag of food.

Alarmed, he quickly contacted New Bern Animal Control for help.

Officer Kevin Bahr was among the first to respond.

When he arrived, he couldn’t believe the scene. The young pup was confined, unable to escape, and clearly abandoned. “Leaving an animal outside in the heat with no water is dangerous and cruel,” he told WITN.

For him and his colleagues, the presence of the note didn’t excuse the act — it only highlighted how preventable the situation truly was.

Locals in the community felt the same shock. “I can’t imagine why anyone would just abandon a puppy like that,” said Matthew Nelson, a nearby resident.

“There are services that will take animals if you can’t care for them. To do it this way is reckless.”

Thankfully, the puppy didn’t have to wait long for kindness. Animal control officers immediately arranged for him to be taken to Craven-Pamlico Animal Services.

There, he would finally be safe, cared for, and prepared for the chance to meet a family who would never walk away from him again.

Abandonment Is a Crime, Not a Solution

Shortly after the rescue, the Craven County Sheriff’s Office – Animal Protective Services issued a statement on Facebook.

They reminded the public that abandoning an animal isn’t just irresponsible — it’s illegal. In North Carolina, under NCGS 14-361.1, leaving a pet in this way can lead to fines of up to $1,000.

Their post drew hundreds of reactions from people who were heartbroken and angry. One commenter wrote, “People never fail to disappoint!!”

Another said, “I don’t know how someone can sleep at night after leaving a dog like that. I have five of my own, and they’re my family.” Others simply expressed sadness over the puppy’s ordeal, calling him “such a cute dog” and sending well wishes for his future.

For officers, this incident was a reminder that there is never an excuse to leave an animal behind. “Everyone’s circumstances are different,” the department wrote, “but leaving a dog where anyone could find him shows a lack of concern for his safety.

There is no tolerance for this kind of behavior in Craven County.”

Today, the little hound is safe in the shelter’s care.

He may have started his life in a cruel and confusing way, but that note — written in a desperate hand — ended up being his lifeline.

Thanks to quick action and compassionate rescuers, he now has the chance to grow up healthy, loved, and protected. His story is a painful reminder of how fragile animals’ lives are in the hands of humans, but also of the hope that still exists when good people step forward.
