Only 473 examples of the 356B Roadster were produced by Belgian coachbuilder d’Ieteren Frères for the 1960 and 1961 model years, making this the rarest regular-production body style in the 356 lineage and among the most sought-after early Porsches.
The Roadster traces its origins to the 1954 Speedster, a stripped-down 356 developed at the request of U.S. importer Max Hoffman to appeal to budget-conscious buyers and SCCA competitors.
When Porsche introduced the T-5 generation 356B in 1960, the Speedster evolved into the Roadster, retaining the low, sporting character of its predecessor while adding roll-up windows and a more substantial convertible top.
Unlike the earlier Speedster, the Roadster featured a taller, more curved windshield and improved weather protection, while still maintaining a purposeful, driver-focused feel that made it popular with enthusiasts.
Power came from a 1,600cc flat-four producing 60 horsepower in Normal form, 75 horsepower in Super trim, or 90 horsepower in Super 90 specification, routed through a four-speed manual transaxle.
Praised for its handling, improved comfort, and visual appeal relative to earlier Speedsters, the d’Ieteren-bodied 356B Roadster occupies a distinct place in Porsche’s early history.
