1937 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante
Jean Bugatti’s creative genius transformed the Type 57 series into a benchmark of Art Deco automotive design, blending his father Ettore’s engineering legacy with bold, forward-thinking aesthetics. The Atalante body style drew inspiration from Greek mythology’s legendary huntress, representing one of the most influential automotive designs ever created.
This streamlined coupé emerged as Jean Bugatti’s refined interpretation of his earlier Aérolithe prototype, addressing the Atlantic’s production challenges while maintaining its dramatic aesthetic. Each Atalante example featured unique characteristics, with some distinguished by large Scintilla headlamps and fully skirted rear fenders.
The “C” designation indicated Compresseur (supercharger), with the 3.3-liter straight-eight engine producing up to 160–180 horsepower, depending on specification. Paired with advanced de Ram shock absorbers and lightweight construction, the Type 57C Atalante was among the fastest and most refined grand touring cars of its era.
