1952 Lancia Ardea 800 Furgoncino
Italian engineering produced one of the most distinctive small commercial vehicles of the early 1950s with the Lancia Ardea 800 Furgoncino. Around 7,000 examples were built, making these compact delivery vans rare today among collectors of European commercial vehicles.
Based on Lancia’s Ardea passenger car platform, the Furgoncino featured a short hood housing what is widely regarded as the smallest production V4 engine ever offered in a road vehicle.
The tiny 903 cc V4 produced about 30 horsepower in fourth-series models like this 1952 example, featuring an aluminum cylinder head and a higher compression ratio than earlier versions.
The practical cargo compartment replaced the rear passenger area while retaining the car’s advanced mechanical layout. Two-tone paint schemes were common, often in stylish combinations that reflected Italian design sensibilities of the era.
These charming commercial variants served a wide range of Italian businesses and government agencies throughout the 1950s before most were retired from regular service.
