1973 Fiat 124 Abarth Spider Sport Rally
Built as a homologation special for international rallying competition, this aggressive 1973 variant transformed the elegant Pininfarina-designed 124 Sport Spider into a purpose-built racing machine.
The Rally featured dramatic flared wheel arches housing wider light-alloy wheels, fiberglass body panels including the hood and trunk lid, and deleted bumpers replaced by simple rubber bumperettes.
A rigid hardtop with an integrated roll bar replaced the convertible soft top, while only three paint colors were available: Corsa red, white, and light blue.
Independent rear suspension with McPherson struts replaced the standard live axle, complemented by a five-speed gearbox and limited-slip differential. The 1,756cc twin-cam four produced 128 horsepower in street trim, with up to 170 horsepower available in full rallying specification.
Only 1,013 examples were built for homologation purposes, serving as Fiat’s frontline rally weapon throughout the mid-1970s. The model achieved notable success, including Maurizio Verini’s 1975 European Rally Championship victory.
