The 1958 Mercury Montclair Hardtop Coupe exemplified late-1950s American automotive excess with flamboyant styling and powerful engines.

Positioned as Mercury’s mid-range offering at $3,240-$3,600, the 213-inch Montclair featured abundant chrome detailing and jet-inspired design cues. The distinctive interior included Mercury’s “Multi-Drive” push-button transmission control system.

Standard power came from a 383-cubic-inch V-8 producing 312 horsepower, but the remarkable option was the 430-cubic-inch “Super Marauder” V-8 with 400 horsepower (America’s first factory-rated 400 HP engine).

Competing against Buick Roadmaster and Oldsmobile Super 88 models, Mercury produced 20,673 Montclairs in 1958, making it relatively exclusive among American luxury automobiles.
