1954 Alvis TC21/100 Drophead Coupé
Introduced in 1953, the TC21/100 represented Alvis’s effort to combine traditional coachbuilt elegance with genuine high-performance capability. With its understated design and refined character, it stood apart from the more flamboyant offerings of the era.
Independent front suspension and traditional coachbuilt styling distinguished the TC21/100 from contemporary British sports cars that often prioritized either handling or elegance. Tickford’s drophead coupé bodywork provided open-air motoring while maintaining proportions that appealed to buyers who valued understatement and craftsmanship.
The overhead-valve six-cylinder engine featured twin SU carburetors and revised exhaust manifolding, delivering both the promised 100 horsepower and 100 mph top speed. This powerplant represented the culmination of Alvis’s 3-liter development program, offering genuine high-performance capability in a sophisticated package.
Autocar magazine praised the model’s appeal to owners who valued “quality and good handling as well as mere performance.” The TC21/100 earned its “Grey Lady” nickname through this blend of refinement and performance, becoming the ultimate expression of Alvis’s sporting philosophy.
Only 81 TC21/100 chassis were bodied by Tickford as drophead coupés, making this one of the rarest configurations in an already exclusive production run. The model also marked the end of Alvis’s golden era of hand-built sporting cars.
