This bird smells so unusual that people once nicknamed it the “stinkbird.”

Deep within the swamps and flooded forests of the Amazon, the Hoatzin moves awkwardly through tangled branches with its spiky crest raised high. It feeds mostly on leaves — a rare diet among birds — and digests them through a fermentation process similar to that of cows, which gives the bird its distinctive odor.

What makes it truly extraordinary is its chicks. Young Hoatzins are born with small claws on their wings, allowing them to climb through branches and escape predators before they can properly fly.

An ancient-looking survivor of the rainforest, yet one of the strangest birds alive today.
