This bird looks more like a tropical jewel than a kingfisher.

Hidden within the dense forests and mangroves of Southeast Asia, the Banded Kingfisher waits silently above streams and shaded water channels. The male glows with rich chestnut and deep blue bands, while the female carries striking black-and-rufous patterns unlike almost any other kingfisher.

It feeds on fish, insects, crabs, and small reptiles, diving swiftly from low branches with deadly precision. Despite its vivid colors, it often disappears completely into the dark forest canopy, remaining motionless for long periods before striking.

A flash of blue and copper in the shadows, yet a silent hunter of the tropical waterways.
