This young bird already carries one of the largest bills in the rainforest.
Hidden in the tropical forests of South America, the young Channel-billed Toucan looks both awkward and extraordinary at the same time. Its oversized bill may seem heavy, but it is surprisingly light, built from a honeycomb-like structure that helps the bird feed and regulate body temperature.
Even at a young age, it begins learning to forage for fruits, insects, and small animals among the canopy branches. As it grows, it will become an important seed disperser, helping rainforest trees spread across vast stretches of jungle.
A curious youngster with an oversized beak, yet a future gardener of the rainforest canopy.
