This young bird looks completely different from the brilliant blue adult it will one day become.
In the wetlands and grassy marshes of New Zealand and nearby islands, the juvenile Pūkeko wanders cautiously through reeds and shallow water on oversized feet. Instead of the adult’s vivid blue and purple plumage, the young bird wears soft brown feathers that help it stay hidden from predators.
It feeds on shoots, seeds, insects, and small aquatic creatures while learning to navigate the marsh alongside its family group. As it grows, its colors slowly transform into the striking shades that make adult Pūkeko unmistakable.
A shy youngster in muted tones, yet a future flash of color across the wetlands.
