Deep within the rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Great Argus walks quietly across the forest floor, its long tail trailing behind like woven silk. The male is famous for the extraordinary patterns covering his wings — hundreds of eye-like spots that create one of the most dramatic displays in the bird world.
During courtship, he clears a space in the forest and spreads his wings into a vast circular fan, transforming himself into a shimmering wall of bronze, gold, and black patterns. It feeds on fallen fruits, seeds, and small animals, moving carefully through the undergrowth of the jungle.
