1942 Chrysler Saratoga Highlander Business Coupe

Chrysler’s 1942 model year proved exceptionally brief due to the United States’ entry into World War II. Civilian automobile production ended in February 1942 as factories converted to military output, making all 1942-model vehicles relatively scarce.

The Saratoga occupied the middle of Chrysler’s range, positioned between the Royal and the New Yorker, and featured the company’s 324 cubic inch Spitfire straight-eight engine producing 120 horsepower. Power was delivered through Chrysler’s Fluid Drive semi-automatic transmission, which allowed clutchless shifting once underway and contributed to the car’s smooth, refined drivability.

The Highlander package added distinctive tartan plaid cloth inserts to the upholstery, lending a more upscale and individualized interior appearance compared to standard models. Business coupes (two-door cars with small or absent rear seats and extra trunk space) were intended primarily for traveling salesmen and professionals who required cargo capacity for samples or equipment.

The Saratoga Business Coupe provided a stylish yet practical configuration, combining luxury appointments with a utilitarian body style that cost less than a full passenger coupe.

Styling for 1942 followed the graceful themes of 1941 but with a bolder, wider horizontal grille composed of bright chrome bars, integrated headlights, and flowing fenders that created a unified, streamlined appearance.

The design reflected Chrysler’s emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency and restrained elegance at the end of the prewar era.

Because of the abbreviated model year, production numbers for 1942 Chryslers remained exceptionally low across all series. With only about 80 Saratoga Highlander Business Coupes believed to have been produced, surviving examples from this interrupted year hold particular significance among collectors of prewar American automobiles.
