This bird looks like it was designed with one of the strangest bills in the bird world. The Boat-billed Heron has a huge, broad bill shaped remarkably like a small boat, along with large dark eyes perfectly suited for hunting at night. Found in mangroves, swamps, and tropical wetlands of the Americas, it spends the daylight hours resting quietly in dense vegetation. After sunset, it becomes an active hunter, using its wide bill to catch fish, crustaceans, insects, and other small aquatic prey.

A bizarre-looking master of the night, proving that in nature, even the strangest designs can have a purpose.
