1957 Buick Super Convertible
Only 2,056 examples were produced, making this one of Buick’s most exclusive offerings during a challenging year for the division. The Super Convertible carried a base price of $3,981, reflecting its position as Buick’s luxury drop-top in the medium-price market.
Buick’s new “Sweep-Ahead” design language created long, flowing lines that emphasized forward motion even while stationary. Four VentiPorts on each front fender distinguished Super models from the less expensive Special series, while the wraparound windshield and modest tailfins captured the optimistic spirit of late-1950s American design.
The 364 cubic inch Fireball V8 engine delivered 300 horsepower, paired with Buick’s Variable Pitch Dynaflow automatic transmission. This powerplant underscored Buick’s focus on performance during an era when rising horsepower figures became important selling points.
Standard equipment included power steering, power brakes, power top, and power windows, with a six-way power seat available as an option. Air conditioning was also optional. Interiors were trimmed in Cordaveen vinyl with four color combinations offered at no extra charge, emphasizing comfort and style.
Despite its impressive specifications, 1957 proved difficult for Buick, which lost its long-held third-place position among American automakers and suffered the sharpest market share decline of all GM divisions.
