He never wanted a cat. That much was clear from the start. When the stray first appeared in his yard, he kept his distance, feeding her only out of a reluctant sense of duty. But the universe had other plans—plans that would test his resolve, soften his heart, and eventually leave him standing in the rain, heartbroken.
A Mother's Desperate Plea
Earlier this year, he noticed she was pregnant. He chose not to interfere, though he continued to leave food out for her after she gave birth. Then one morning, she appeared at his door carrying something in her mouth—a tiny kitten. She ran over meowing as soon as she saw him, as if begging him to take the fragile bundle from her.
But the man didn’t want the kitten. He shook his head, turned away. She tried everything to convince him—showing off how well-behaved her baby was, how quiet, how easy. Frustrated, he picked up the kitten and placed it back into the nest. She stared at him in disbelief.

That night, the sky opened up. Rain poured down in sheets, soaking everything. The man lay in bed, unable to sleep. He thought of the mother and her kitten out in the storm. Something shifted inside him. In the middle of the night, he got up, walked to their nest, and brought them both inside.

Letting Go
He cared for them until the kittens were old enough to be adopted. One by one, they found homes. Then he let the mother go, hoping she would find her own way. But soon after, she vanished. Days turned into weeks with no sign of her.
Until one day, he saw her—being carried in the arms of another man. She had snuck into a stranger’s bed one night when a window was left open, and refused to leave. The new owner had only one cat. The man who had fed her, sheltered her, and finally opened his home to her—he already had many.

He was a bit heartbroken, yes. But he also felt a strange sense of peace. She had chosen a home where she would be the only cat, where she would get all the love and attention she deserved. He had done what he could—and in the end, that was enough.
