Every police officer takes an oath to serve and protect the community, and that duty extends to even the most vulnerable and helpless, including our furry friends.
On October 5, 2019, officers Mercado and the Los Angeles Police Department (Hollywood Division) were patrolling the streets when they noticed something unexpected trailing behind them. A little ball of fur was following their every step as if pleading for help.
It was a sweet, tiny brown puppy, lost and wandering on the busy streets of Los Angeles. The officers couldn’t resist the little pup’s desperate attempt to get their attention. As soon as the officers stopped, the puppy hurried over, hoping to be rescued. It was a heartwarming moment that melted their hearts instantly.
A Bond That Couldn’t Be Broken
They decided to name the puppy Hobart, after Hobart Blvd., the very street where they first met him.
Too small and fragile to survive on his own, the officers knew they couldn’t leave him behind. Without hesitation, they scooped him up and brought him along to the police station.
The bond between Hobart and Officer Mercado was immediate. The little dog seemed to be head over paws for him, following him everywhere.
The sight of Hobart trailing behind the officer was simply too cute for words.
The LAPD Hollywood Division posted a video of Hobart and Mercado on their social media, captioning it, “Hobart won’t leave Officer Mercado’s side!! 🥺 #HollywoodHobart”. The video captured Hobart’s adoring gaze and loyal behavior, and it was enough to make anyone smile.
A New Family and A Viral Moment
During the ride back to the station, Hobart curled up comfortably on Officer Tavera’s lap, gazing at his rescuers with love and trust.
The officers had earned his complete devotion, and it was clear the little dog was grateful to be saved.
When they arrived at the station, Hobart was given the honorary rank of K-9. Everyone at the police department fell head over heels for this little guy, and soon, he had an entire squad of fans.
But as much as they loved him, they knew the station wasn’t the right home for such a vulnerable pup. He needed a place where he could receive proper care and attention.
That’s when the officers reached out to Ghetto Rescue FFoundation (GRFF), a local rescue group known for helping animals in need. GRFF welcomed Hobart with open arms, ensuring he received all the necessary veterinary care and vaccinations.
Initially, Hobart was set to be adopted. However, by this time, the video of him lovingly following Officer Mercado had gone viral, with people suggesting that the two should never be separated.
A Forever Home for Hobart
What no one knew was that Alejandro Mercado had already sent a photo of Hobart to his wife, Quincy Hutchison, and as soon as she saw it, she fell in love. Without a moment’s hesitation, she asked her husband if they could adopt him.
A few days later, the LAPD Hollywood Division gave everyone the update they were waiting for: “A lot of you have been asking what Hobart is up to these days… you’ll be happy to know Officer Mercado has adopted him, and he’s now living the good life with Mercado and his family!”
It was the perfect ending for Hobart, who had clearly found his forever home. One person even commented, “These two are definitely meant to be together! Congrats on your new home, Hobart!”
Months later, GRFF posted an update, sharing that Hobart had settled in beautifully with his new family.
Along with a house full of rescue dogs and a K-9 companion, Hobart was truly where he belonged.
Hobart has certainly grown into his big ears, and he’s more adorable than ever.
“Update on Hobart (now called Fidzgit): He’s the most loving and lively little pup. He enjoys hours of playtime with his puppy cousins and loves chewing on his toys. Still learning potty training, but he’s having the best time with his family!”
Hobart, once a lost little pup on the streets of Los Angeles, now lives his dream life.
It’s safe to say he hit the jackpot that day when he was “arrested” for being too cute!
